Acute toxicity tests of a textile mill wastewater effluent and a "detergent wash" with a Hermit crab (Climbinarius Africanus) (Aurivillius) OceanDocs
Ajao, E.A..
Bioassay tests were conducted with wastewater effluents from a textile mili and a detergent packing plant using the hermit crab. Clibinarius africanus. (Aurivillus) as experimental animal. LC50 values were evaluated using static testing procedures for 24, 48 and 96 hour. For the textile effluent, means of 79.0, 50.24 and 51.81 percentage effluent by volume were obtained in respect of crabs in the “medium” weight range (0.3 – 0.7grams) for the test periods. For the “detergent wash”, 95.16, 85.00 and 82.33 percentage effluent by volume represented means of values obtained for “small” size crabs (weight range 0.08–0.24 grams) and 96.0, and 81.50 percentage effluent by volume for ‘medium’ size crabs for 24, 48 and 96 hour respectively. Spearman’s Rank...

Bacterial production in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) evaluated by ³H-leucine incorporation BABT
Gonzalez,Alessandra M.; Paranhos,Rodolfo; Andrade,Luciana; Valentin,Jean L..
The aim of this work was to evaluate the necessary ³H-leucine concentration to estimate bacterial production in Guanabara Bay through saturation curves. A second aim was to collect preliminary data of bacterial production in two distinct sites corresponding to different water qualities: Urca inlet and Governador Island. Saturation curves were made with water samples taken at the main circulation channel of the bay, Paquetá Island, and the two sites mentioned before. The ³H-leucine curves showed similar pattern for all studied areas, indicating the ideal isotope concentration to be 10 nM. Bacterial biomass production ranged from 0.40 to 4.53 µgC L-1 h-1 in Urca and from 3.86 to 73.72 µgC L-1 h-1 in Governador Island indicating the relationship between...

Colombia's Discharge Fee Program: Incentives for Polluters of Regulators? AgEcon
Blackman, Allen.
Colombia's discharge fee system for water effluents is often held up as a model of a well-functioning, economic-incentive pollution control program in a developing country. Yet few objective, up-to-date evaluations of the program have appeared. Based on a variety of primary and secondary evaluative data, this paper finds that that the program has been beset by a number of serious problems including limited implementation in many regions, widespread noncompliance by municipal sewage authorities, and a confused relationship between discharge fees and discharge standards. Nevertheless, in several watersheds, pollution loads dropped significantly after the program was introduced. While proponents claim the incentives that discharge fees created for polluters...

Comparison between four and seven-day Ceriodaphnia dubia survival and reproduction test protocols using oil refinery effluent samples BABT
Oliveira-Filho,Eduardo Cyrino; Da-Matta,Anndressa Camillo; Cabral,Lucianna Lopes; Veiga,Letícia Falcão; Paumgartten,Francisco José Roma.
The aim of this study was to compare the 7-day Ceriodaphnia dubia survival and reproduction test with a 4 day test to evaluate the toxicity of oil refinery effluents. Both shown identical NOECs with three of 6 tested samples. With one of the tested samples, the 4-day NOEC was one tested-concentration lower, and with the remaining two samples, it was one tested-concentration higher than those obtained using the 7-day protocol. Then results suggested that 4 and 7-day protocols were comparable to detect toxic effects.

Abarnou, Alain; Simon, S.
This report is a synthesis of data concerning PCB concentrations in water, sediments and organisms (Bivalvia, Malacostraca, Pisces). Water analysis shows that Seine River is the primordial factor affecting PCB dispersion in the bay. Sediment contamination is higher near estuary along Calvados coast. PCB levels in Mytilidae and in Pectinidae set the problem of polluant origin, dispersion and effects on estuarine organisms.

Contiguous urban rivers should not be necessarily submitted to the same management plan: the case of Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (São Paulo-Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Cunha,Davi G. F.; Grull,Doron; Damato,Murilo; Blum,José R. C.; Eiger,Sergio; Lutti,José E.I.; Mancuso,Pedro C. S..
The management of urban water resources plays an important role for developing countries. The Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (São Paulo, Brazil) are affected by domestic and industrial effluents and by the diffuse pollution. This research aimed to quantify 134 variables in the water of Tietê and Pinheiros Rivers (approximately 7,200 and 6,600 analyses, respectively) from August 2007 to December 2008. The idea was to verify if the fact that both rivers are located in the same basin is enough to consider the application of a single management plan for both. Data showed that the rivers presented significant anthropogenic interference. The results suggested that such rivers must be subjected to individual management plans since there were exclusive occurrences...

Thenya, Thuita; Wassmann, Reiner; Verchot, Louis; Mungai, David.
Land degradation is as a result of broad range of scales and factors, which include biophysical, climatic, demographic and socio-economic. The aim of this paper was to provide an analysis of wetland utilisation, ecosystem degradation and their effect on the Lake Victoria (Kenya) ecosystem. This involved analysis of socioeconomic and remote sensed data. The main sources of wetland degradation in the Lake Victoria basin were identified as (1) farming activities, (2) grazing and macrophyte harvesting and (3) coupled with catchment degradation-deforestation. These factors were closely related to the demographic dynamics and unsustainable land utilisation practices. Socio-economic data provided valuable insight on the pattern of wetland utilisation and possible...

Examining the Effects of Ecological and Political Boundaries on the Potential for Water Quality Trading: Lessons from a Southeastern Trading Framework AgEcon
Keiser, David A.; Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bergstrom, John C.; Smith, Nathan B.; Radcliffe, David E.; Risse, Mark L.; Fowler, Laurie A..
Water quality trading (trading) as a means to improve water quality has become an increasingly popular instrument considered by environmental policy makers. Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists more than forty current trading programs in the U.S., only a few active markets exist. The literature identifies several hurdles to trading, overcoming which requires a deeper understanding of the interaction between local environmental, legal, and economic conditions. Particular challenges include thin markets, uncertainty related to the course and fate of nutrient flows, varying degrees of political support, and high transaction costs related to market infrastructure, monitoring, and enforcement. These hindrances often arise from and...

Groundwater pollution and emerging environmental challenges of industrial effluent irrigation in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu AgEcon
Mukherjee, Sacchidananda; Nelliyat, Prakash.
Industrial disposal of effluents on land and the subsequent pollution of groundwater and soil of surrounding farmlands – is a relatively new area of research. The environmental and socioeconomic aspects of industrial effluent irrigation have not been studied as extensively as domestic sewage based irrigation practices, at least for a developing country like India. The disposal of effluents on land has become a regular practice for some industries. Industries located in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu, dispose their effluents on land, and the farmers of the adjacent farmlands have complained that their shallow open wells get polluted and also the salt content of the soil has started building up slowly. This study attempts to capture the environmental and...
